The Outsiders is a coming-of-age novel by S.E. Hinton, first published in 1967 by Viking Press. Hinton was 15 when she started writing the novel but did most of the work when she was 16 and a junior in high school. Hinton was 18 when the book was published. The book was published on April 24, 1967. The publishers are, Viking Press, Dell Publishing, Random House, Penguin Group USA, Listening Library, Speak/Penguin, Otava, Turtleback Books, Alfaguara and HarperCollins.
The characters in the book are Ponyboy Curtis , Johnny Cade, Sodapop Curtis, Darrel Curtis, Dallas Winston, and Two-bit Mathews. Ponyboy is 14 years old and the youngest of the greasers, and his parents died in a car accident--he is also the narrator of the story. Johnny is 16 years old and he has big black eyes, dark tanned face, his hair is jet black and heavily greased. Sodapop is 17 years old his hair is long and dark golden color that lightens in the summer, he also quit school. Darry is 20 years old, he quit school, and he works 2 jobs to hold the family together. Dallas is 17 years old he lived on the streets of New York City for three years and he has almost white blonde hair and blue eyes. And Last but not least Two-bit Mathews is 18 years old he has grey eyes and rust colored hair. Two-bit is around 6 feet tall and hes always wearing a wide grin.
The Outsiders is about two weeks in the life of a 14 year old boy. The novel tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis and his struggles with right and wrong society in which he believes that he is an Outsider. The boys are Greasers, a class term that refers to the young men on the east side the poor side of town.
In the beginning of the book The Socs chase down Ponyboy and beat him up and cut his neck, after that Ponyboy, Johnny, Two-bit, and Dallas went to the movies and they meet Cherry and Marcia. Dallas harasses cherry and leaves after johnny yells at him to stop. After the movie they leave and Cherry's and Marcia's boyfriends chase them down for hanging out with their girls then something terrible happens. Johnny kills Bob Cherry's boyfriend because they were drowning Ponyboy in the fountain, Johnny had no choice because after they were done with Ponyboy they were going to beat up johnny. After johnny killed Bob the other Socs ran away and left Bob to die.
After, they left the park and went to find Dally. Dally gave them money and a gun, Dally told them to get on a train and go to a abandoned church and stay there for a week. They went to the church and stayed there for a couple days then Dally went to the church and they were on their way home and when they left there was a fire started due to johnny because he threw a lit cigarette on the ground it wasn't intentional. Since there was a fire at the church and they went back there were kids in the church and Ponyboy, Johnny, and dally went in there to save the kids after the kids were safe dally and ponyboy didn't see johnny come out so they went back in and a beam fell on Johnny's back and broke his back and he had third degree burns. Ponyboys back was on fire and dally put out the fire by hitting him and Ponyboy passed out. They went to the hospital and Soda visited them and stayed there for a couple days then they had a big rumble with the Socs and won and chased them out of town. After they went back to the hospital and told johnny they won and johnny died. Then Dally said he couldn't live without johnny because he was the only thing dally loved so he robbed a store and pulled out a gun in front of the cops and the cops shot him and he died.
