The Chernobyl Disaster By: Jade Siemsen

The Chernobyl Disaster happened in the year 1986, which was caused by a flawed reactor. Many people died when putting out the fire, and killed many more because of radiation poisoning. If you want to learn more about the incident, then continue reading!

Chernobyl is a city in Ukraine (which is now abandoned), as well as a nuclear power plant. And on April 25, the crew was going to test Chernobyl 4, a reactor. It was tested over and over again. As the operator was going to shut it down, the reactor was in unstable conditions. When the operator shut the reactor down, it put hot rods in it. The hot rods interacting with the cool water caused fuel fragmentation and increased pressure. The reactor was so unstable that when they added 3 to 4 fuel assemblies, it caused a lot of damage. When the reactor exploded it not only released fission products into the air, but it caused another explosion.

Remember those fission products released into the air? Well, the wind spread the products Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Scandinavia, and Europe. It caused many people to get sick. They got the radiation from breathing it in, soaking in their skin, and ingesting food and water.

The disaster ended in 1986, and a total of 43 people died. People can take tours there, but they can only go in the least radioactive areas. On the bottom of this post, you will see how radioactive the Chernobyl Disaster was. I hope you learned a lot from this post. Thank you!
