Is it Okay to Use Animals as Test Subjects? By: Bradley Armstrong

According to a writer on the "History of Animal Testing" from ProCon.org, "An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing." Animals should not be used as test subjects because there is a high chance of the animal dying from the test that is performed. As stated in the text, " Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, check the safety of products destined for human use, and other biomedical, commercial, and health care uses." This shows me that harmful toxins are being put into animals bodies that they can die from. Using animals as test subjects is also cruel to the animal and its species.

As stated in the text, " Opponents of animal testing say that it is cruel and inhumane to experiment on animals...". Testing animals is a very mean thing to do. We also shouldn't use animals as test subject because there is alternative testing methods. As stated in the text, " In vitro (in glass) testing, such as studying cell cultures in a petri dish, can produce more relevant results than animal testing because human cells can be used." This shows me that there is different ways to test things than to harm animals. Another reasons we shouldn't use animals for testing is that the results on the animal might not be the same result as a human being. As stated in the text, " 94% of drugs that pass animal tests fail in human clinical trials. This shows me that a test on an animal might not have the same result that a human may have. I don't think that testing animals is an okay thing to to because many animals die from the testing and it is a very cruel thing to do to the animal itself. There is also other ways to test things like antibiotics than harming innocent animals.
