Eastern State Penitentiary By:Ella Hanselman

Eastern State Penitentiary is the number 1 most haunted place in America. Eastern State Penitentiary is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eastern State Penitentiary took solitary confinement to new levels when it was built in 1829. Prisoners exercised alone, ate alone, and lived alone. When a prisoner left his cell the guard would put a hood over his head so he couldn't see or be seen. The prison had to abandon its solitary system due to overcrowding in 1913 until it closed in 1970, although the forms of punishment did not get any less severe (chaining a inmates tongue to his wrists for example).

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cell blocks and empty guard towers. Known for its strict discipline this was the worlds first ''penitentiary,'' a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of prisoners. Al Capone Chicago's most famous mob boss was held there in prison for eight months. He was arrested for carrying a concealed, deadly weapon. This was Capone's first prison sentence. He was arrested in 1929 and released in 1930.
