Do the Cubs Need Bryce Harper?

By: Brett Clyne

In my opinion, the Chicago Cubs don't need Bryce Harper, because the Cubs don't have a lot of money to spend and Harper is estimated to be worth at least a 300 million dollar contract. To add on to that the Cubs don't need any more power, or fielding in the outfield with Kyle Schwarber, Albert Almora, Ian Happ, and Jason Heyward. For example, in the 2018 regular season Albert Almora had a batting average of .286, Jason Heyward had a batting average of .270, Kyle Schwarber's batting average was .238, Ian Happ's batting average was .233, and Bryce Harper's batting average was .249. This shows that Almora and Hayward had better batting averages in the 2018 regular season than Harper. It also shows that Happ and Schwarber's batting averages were not to far behind.

When it comes to fielding Heyward, Almora, Schwarber, Happ, and Harper all have similar fielding percentages. For example, Almora's fielding percentage is .989, Happ and Heyward's fielding percentage is .988, Schwarber's fielding percentage is .995, and Harper's fielding percentage is .993. This shows that Harper is better than most of the Cubs outfielders at field, but they are not far behind, and Kyle Schwarber even has a better fielding percentage than Bryce Harper. All in all, Harper in my opinion is not needed by the Chicago Cubs, in order to make them a competitor to win the World Series, due to the 2018 regular season statistics.

Not only, is it not totally worth it for fielding and hitting, but in the past Harper has been on the DL due to injuries. While most of the Cubs outfielders, have only been on the DL for maybe a season or less. For example, Harper hasn't played a full season without getting injured since his rookie year, when he was 19 years old, which was 5 years ago. On the other hand, the longest a Cubs player has been out since a long time was in 2016 when Kyle Schwarber was injured on April 7, in the 2016 spring training and was out till the World Series against the Cleveland Indians, on October 25, 2016. All in all, I think that for the Cubs Bryce Harper is not a very intelligent pick-up.
